Kayaking with Orca
Wow life in Auckland doesn’t get much better than this. We went out for a kayak from Takapuna beach on Saturday morning. It was an absolute stunner of a day, warm with not much wind and flat calm. We kayaked along the coast and down to North Head and paused to take in the views of the harbour with Rangitoto and Brown Islands in the distance – I remember thinking Auckland is such a cool place to live. On our way back half way between Narrow neck and Takapuna, I looked up to see a massive fin coming towards us. Before we knew it we were surrounded by a pod of seven orca - three big doods, a couple of tiny calves and some medium sized ones. What an amazing experience. We followed them down the coast back to North Head as they fished for Sting ray. At one point one of the big guys passed under the kayak within inches of us – it was incredible –once he had gone I couldn’t stop my knees from knocking together. A little freaky!! As they rounded North head we left them to it and headed back to Takapuna only to be faced with another 8 or so Orca coming towards us. Wow wow and wow – that was one hell of an experience and one we’ll never forget.
